Council on American-Islamic Relations
Background Information The Council on American-Islamic Relations was founded in 1994 as a response to the negative portrayal of Muslims and the stereotypes attached to being Muslim. As an NGO (Non-governmental organization) as well as an NPO (Non Profit Organization) headquartered in Washington D.C. it serves as a civil rights group for Muslims. Through lobbying, education, and media relations it tries to bring together members of the non-Muslim American community to a level of understanding of what Islam is about and how it should not be viewed as a threat. It tries to present the Islamic narrative of the American society to all groups within the United States. It actively tries to promote the Muslim community's empowerment through social discourse and political activism.
Among Its Core Principals it includes:

Vision CAIR's vision is to be a leading advocate for justice and mutual understanding. CAIR's mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
Education Through appearing in the media whether directly in the form a podcast or a public service announcement or in the news as an organization representing Muslims in the United States, CAIR educates the American public of issues surrounding their fellow Muslim-Americans. And by doing so and making people more able to relate to American Muslims they are a starting point for dialogue and the main goal of understanding and lessening of stereotyping, discrimination and prejudices targeted toward Muslim Americans. All of this while making Islam accepted in the American community as a religion that should hold equal standing as Christianity, Judaism, and other major religions.
